Since being made redundant while on maternity leave in 2013, I have consistently blogged and seen it as more than a hobby. There was always a desire to make it more and I would sometimes daydream that it could one day earn me a modest income. I treat this as my job, I take pride in it and I work really hard at producing original content. Naturally the next phase would be to actually get paid for doing it.
My goal is not to earn millions (although it’d be nice!), merely enough to be able to treat my family to breakfast at our favourite lake side cafe. Or, you’know, purchase the occasional handbag. (Once a month counts as occasional, right?) Also, TWINS!! Who knew they ate so much?
So, considering all that, I recently decided to monetize my blog in a bid to become self-employed and earn a living. I’m really excited to tell you that I’ve finally done it!!!
What this means is that I have added space for adverts that will be supplied via a third party (you may already be seeing them). I may also use affiliate links in the future. (An affiliate link is a link where should a Reader click through and/or make a purchase then an advertiser may pay me a small commission). I also believe my site may start to use something called cookies. Not of the actual kind unfortunately, but of the virtual kind.
The Reader base is growing and I absolutely love and appreciate the community that exists both on the blog and my social media pages. I understand that some people may prefer it when blogs don’t monetize. I’ve read that some people intensely dislike affiliate links but personally it’s never bothered me. I read blogs because I like the content and if the blogger makes a buck out of it then so be it. It’s not really any of my business because it’s not like I’m the one who is paying. As long as site owners are open about the fact that they may make a commission then I’m happy.
Anyway, I debated about whether to actually write this post but then, like in my real life, I like to be transparent and honest at all times and I think you guys deserve an explanation with this kind of thing. You can read my fairly boring formal disclaimer here.
Thanks for your continued support, it really does mean the world to me. Also, who else is now in the mood for cookies?
